This was the final assignment from my Figure Drawing I course. I have now completed Figure II and feel I have improved beyond this level, but as always I like to use this Tumblr as a log for my improvement.

The assignment was to draw a self-portrait that expressed my personality. I’ve always struggled with finding a balance between myself and my feminine side. I intentionally drew my portrait asymmetrically, half with make-up and all done up and half without as well as with two different expressions to depict this confusion.

I was assigned to draw an alter-ego. My professor allowed for a broad interpretation. I mapped out an ideal self in words, starting with the word “student” and ending at “child.” I think children are the ultimate students and that in many cases humanity and especially artists should aspire to their willingness to create as well as destroy. I chose to depict myself playing with building blocks because I felt that they symbolized the joy kids find in building things up, knocking them over, and beginning again.

Subtractive Graphite. 20”x30”. Homework Assignment: Create a scene that implies an event has occurred. Use a drawing method we have learned in class, and render the scene as realistically as possible. Work from life only.__
The suicide rate among women is higher in countries where arranged marriage is legal. There are many awful stories about women who have committed suicide after being forced by their family to marry. Some women who have refused to marry the grooms chosen for them, have become subject to “honor killings”.I chose to depict a woman’s vanity area after preparing to, and committing suicide. The empty ringbox represents her recent forced engagement. She wrote her letter, prayed her rosary, and swallowed her pills.http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1581481,00.htmlhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jan/11/british-asian-forced-marriagesClick-through to original post for full-size image.
